Newborn Eastern Cottontail: This photo of an eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) was taken in Pomfret Connecticut in June 2013. This nest was concealed under some grass and weeds in a small hole lined with vegetation and fur.
The average period of gestation of a Eastern Cottontail is 28 days. Young normally begin to venture off on short trips by 12 to 16 days and are completely independent by 4 to 5 weeks. The mother will visit the nest several times during the day to nurse her kits.
