Cottontail Kits: This photo of two eastern cottontail kits (Sylvilagus floridanus) was taken in Pomfret Connecticut in June 2013. There were 4 more kits behind these two. This nest was concealed under some grass and weeds in a small hole lined with vegetation and fur.
The average period of gestation of a Eastern Cottontail is 28 days. Young normally begin to venture off on short trips by 12 to 16 days and are completely independent by 4 to 5 weeks at which time they leave the nest. The mother will visit the nest several times during the day to nurse her kits.
WELCOME to NEAL ESLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY! Hello and Thank you for visiting my Gallery! My focus has always been with capturing various subjects found in nature. Animals, Birds, Insects, Flowers and Landscapes. Most of my photography is taken in New England. I frequent Bigelow Hollow State Park, Yale-Myers Forest, James L. When not in Connecticut, you will often find me exploring in New Hampshire,...

Thank you Jeff; Luckily I didn't run these guys over with the lawnmower...I saw the ground shaking which told me to investigate further. I am so happy I did!!
